About the thavil
The thavil is a barrel-shaped drum played with a stick on one side and a hand wrapped in finger caps on the other. Its powerful sound is made to carry across open temple grounds.
It is the traditional partner of the nadaswaram in Tamil Nadu's temple and wedding music.
