Buying guide

Choosing your first instrument.

Six questions that save beginners from the wrong purchase. Plain advice, no sales pitch.

1

Start with the teacher

Most teachers have a view on the instrument, size and pitch. Ask first, then bring that advice to the shop.

2

Decide the pitch

Many South Indian instruments are built around one pitch, or shruti. A mridangam, a shruti box or a tanpura chosen at the wrong pitch will not suit the player. Know the shruti before you buy.

3

Match the size to the player

Children and adults need different sizes. Ask to hold or sit with the instrument.

4

Choose a learner's instrument first

A good student instrument is better than an expensive one that is too much for a beginner. You can upgrade as the player grows.

5

Plan for the spares

Strings, reeds, heads and covers wear out. Ask what you will need to replace and how often.

6

Play it before you pay

Visit, listen, and try it in your hands. Bring the player if you can.
