Violin
வயலின்
Central to Carnatic accompaniment, and loved in Western music too.
About the violin
The violin was adopted into Carnatic music, where it is played seated and is the usual melodic accompaniment to a vocalist. It is equally at home in Western classical and film music.
Carnatic violinists tune to the performer's shruti, so good strings and a stable set of pegs matter.
