Start with the shruti
A mridangam is tuned to a pitch, called the shruti, and a vocalist or instrumentalist performs in one shruti. Before you buy, ask the teacher which shruti the student will play in, and choose a drum whose right head sits comfortably at that pitch.
Check the build
A mridangam is a double-headed barrel drum, traditionally made of jackwood. Look at the shell for cracks, check that both heads are even and clean, and see that the leather straps are sound.
The right head carries a black tuning paste at its centre. It should be smooth and well-set, because it shapes the clear, ringing sound of the drum.
Size and the player
Children and adults are comfortable with different sizes. Sit with the drum in the playing position and make sure the player can reach both heads without strain.
Plan for upkeep
Heads and straps wear with use. Ask the shop about re-skinning, re-tuning and replacement straps, so the drum keeps its sound for years.
